The ad I chose for my piece was about a slave named Duca (by his master). In the ad, he is also identified by fresh whip marks on his lower right side. He was of a yellowish complexion because he was of mixed blood. Because of this description I chose to give the painting an almost orange complexion to accent this detail. I also painted a series of scars on his lower right side of the torso. I thought to add the words “Property of” in a brand-like fashion across his shoulder blades to symbolize the interchangeable ownership of the slaves (as if a man just signed his name and the slave was his). The brand also explains that slaves, like all normal property, are disposable and exchangeable. For the background I chose to make it simple, to not distract from the body, and to make the green symbolic of hope, an emotion that most slaves of the period had.
