Almost Alone

The ad I chose was the one containing the description of Lucretia. This ad caught my eye not only because she was one of the few women escaping, but that she was “great with child.” In all of the ads, the objectification of the slaves was obvious and the detailed descriptions helped me to develop her appearance. But what I wanted to do was show the person of Lucretia, her inner thoughts and emotions that motivated her to flee with her unborn child. Within my paintings I’ve tried to portray the back story of her and the father of her baby. He knew that she had to leave if she wanted a good life for their child; the overseer of the slaves had used Lucretia’s well-being as a motivation for her husband to work, and now, in her pregnancy, even more was at stake, Lucretia had to leave.
