Hills of Freedom

For my “Pretends to Be Free” project, I chose the ad from the New York Gazette describing a man named Bill. I chose this ad because it gave a broader description of the man instead of a very detailed one. This attracted me because it gave me more freedom when creating my piece of art. When I started my work, I used black paper and preferred to use the smooth side rather than the grainy side because I find it messes up my lines. Then I used white charcoal for the rest of the drawing. I like the idea of using only black and white because it gave a greater contrast of colors and had a the effect of showing the emotion of the man. My work represents his desire to be free. He is looking off into the distance surrounded by vast fields, which represent his infinite options for the future. The hills in the background represent the problems he might encounter, but one can also get over hills. And as Randy Pausch once said, “The brick walls are there to stop people who don’t want it enough.”
