Find a New Perspective on Colonial New York

Cross the millpond bridge to Philipsburg Manor, a mill and trading complex where an enslaved community lived and labored for generations.

Learn about the enslaved individuals who worked on the property in the year 1750, and whose family relationships and personal histories are revealed in primary documents.
Step into the gristmill and learn about the life of Caesar, the enslaved miller, whose unmatched expertise contributed to the wealth of the Philipse family but benefited him not at all.

Visit the dairy in the cellar of the Manor House, where a commercial butter production was operated by Dina, Massey and Sue, three of the women enslaved by the Philipses at the site.

Discover the many ways the enslaved community at Philipsburg Manor maintained family networks, shared their cultural heritage, and expressed their fundamental humanity in opposition to the inhumane system that bound them.

FAQs

How does your tour treat the subject of slavery?

Tours and field trips at Philipsburg Manor include factual descriptions of slavery in colonial New York and feature historic sites and objects associated with the experience of enslavement. Trained educators in period clothing deliver tours using a third-person script based in extensive scholarship and primary documents. Historic Hudson Valley recognizes that this is sensitive and painful historical content, and as a matter of policy, we do not ask visitors, students, teachers, or our own staff to role-play the part of an enslaved person or an enslaver. Please contact [email protected] if you have additional questions or concerns.

Are there group or school tours available?

We welcome groups of 10 or more at Philipsburg Manor. See more information about our group tours.

Philipsburg Manor has a variety of school programs designed for grades K-12. Learn more.

Visitor Center and Site Access

  • Handicapped parking is available at the Visitor Center as well as handicapped restrooms.
  • The entire site (including the Visitor Center) is about 5 acres.

Historic Core

  • The historic core has limited wheelchair accessibility. The grist mill, the barn, and the lower kitchen and first floor of the Manor House are accessible using ramps. The Activity Center and the second floor of the Manor House are not wheelchair accessible.
  • There are a few steps into each building. There is a narrow, steep flight of 12 stairs from the first to the second floor of the Manor House and another similar flight of stairs back down to the first floor.

Is photography allowed?

Photography and video recording for personal use are permitted on the grounds. No photography of any kind is permitted inside the house. Audio recording of the tours is also not permitted.
