The article I chose is from the New York Weekly Post Boy dated April 23, 1753. I felt passionate about the hardships the slaves faced, and felt as if I were struggling too. I was inspired by the adversity the slave Nell faced as a runaway slave. She had escaped from her manor having only the clothes she could carry. During these times of oppression, life as a slave felt hopeless and desolate. The ad portrays the biases slave owners held and how slaves were treated as mere objects.
Through my piece I wanted to depict the darkness of enslavement at the plantation
contrasted with the light of freedom. I shaded the doves from dark to light
tones demonstrating this movement. Nell was very much like a dove yearning
to fly away to freedom, and I wanted my piece to convey that idea.
