For my piece I chose the ad from the "New York Gazette" describing the African-American man Ben. This piece is an inspiring yet sad article because it depicts a man with the courage to overcome his fear and strive for more than what he has been unjustly set with. The red in the painting represents the bloody and grim experience that constitutes slavery. The figure of the man progresses unwavering towards the white, which represents the free life which awaits.
