The ad that I chose is the one that appeared in the New-York Gazette on April 1, 1754. I chose this ad because I really thought the concept of people escaping in a boat in the night was a very interesting image. I also liked the concept of people working together in order to escape. One of the inherent biases contained in the ad, I noticed, was that there was more focus on the clothes the slaves were wearing than the slaves themselves. The process I used in creating my work was using pastels to create the background and boat. Then I used charcoal on top of that to put the people in the picture. The meaning of the work is it shows the trouble that was gone through to gain freedom.
