The biggest step to completing this project was thinking of a way to portray slavery. I made numerous sketches showing grown men being whipped and other ideas, but when it came time to start the piece, I sketched a black man walking through endless fields towards freedom. The most important part, I feel, is the beauty and peacefulness of the environment despite the hardships behind and the many more ahead. I named the piece "The Walk" because it is a very general term, symbolizing the thousands of slaves who escaped hell and went looking for heaven.
