Ichabod Crane, Respectfully Dedicated to Washington Irving.
William J. Wilgus (1819 - 1853), artist
Chromolithograph, c. 1856

"If I could but reach that bridge" thought Ichabod "I am safe." Just then he heard the black steed panting and blowing close behind him, he even fancied he felt his hot breath.  Just then he saw the goblin rising in his stirrups and in the very act of hurling his head at him."

This quotation is reproduced on the lithograph to underscore the terror Ichabod Crane experiences as he attempts to outride the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.
