Washington Irving.
Attributed to Charles Robert Leslie, oil on canvas, 1820.

In 1820 Irving was again in Europe, no longer as the exploring tourist, but as the popular young American writer.  His Sketch-Book proved a great success with English readers, even though originally he had difficulties in securing a publisher for the work.  With this new-found fame, Irving became a popular figure in social circles.
