Armchair

Armchair
Manhattan, c. 1700
Maple

Details of its construction suggest that it was created by a French chairmaker, possibly one of the many Huguenots (French Protestants) who immigrated to New York. The chair belonged to Stephanus Van Cortlandt, neighbor, father-in-law, and political ally of Frederick Philipse.
