Dorene.jpgNext up in the MtC series is Dorene Picker, assistant art director to Michael Natiello.

BB: What's your day job?
JDP: Lots of Blaze functions, working as an interpreter and security guard at Van Cortlandt Manor, professional mixologist, and full-time grad student.

BB: What kind of carvings are you working on for Blaze 2007?
JDP: A bit of each theme.

BB: Are you working on any other Blaze-related items?
JDP: General setup and funkin repairs.

BB: What are your preferred carving tools and methods?
JDP: X-Acto #2 and #11 blades, keyhole saws.

BB: Got any carving tips for a novice?
JDP: Use one pumpkin to "test" different cuts and techniques on before working on your final product.

BB: What's your favorite pumpkin-based food?
JDP: Cream of pumpkin soup.

BB: What's your favorite Halloween movie?
JDP: Hocus Pocus, but the Harry Potter movies, Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal count, too!

BB: Toasted pumpkin seeds: Salt or no salt?
JDP: Extra sea salt, please.

BB: What makes pumpkins so special?
JDP: They are versatile and they are (or were, at least) unique to United States Halloween traditions.

BB: If I were a carved pumpkin, I'd be...
JDP: A detailed dragon.

BB: Thank you, Dorene!

WOW!!!! This lady can really carve! When you get to Blaze be sure to stop in the tent and check out her detailed pumpkins, her work is absolutely amazing! After watching her for over a half hour I think I'm ready to carve my own masterpieces. Maybe some day I can apply to be a carver for blaze? smilies/smiley.gif

Ms. Picker is not only a fabulous carver but a "wicked" witch! We love her at Legend weekend.

I was at the great blaze on Saturday night and there were no carving demonstrations. Is this only done on Fridays? My kids were looking forward to seeing the professionals show their carving skills.
Ms. Picker is amazing!!!

I was at blaze the first night and had the great pleasure of watching Ms. Picker at the carving booth. She was fantastic!!! I have never seen such a talented pumpkin carver. She took time to talk to us and explain all about the different pumpkins and carving techniques. She even shared some of her pumpkin beauty secrets. Blaze obviously brings out the best in this artist. Ms. Picker is a great asset to the Blaze event!! Try to see her if you have the chance.
