Can this possibly be hand-carved?

Celticafter2.jpgA typical Jack O’Lantern might not seem like that big of a deal for someone to create, especially if they are already blessed with an artistic eye. But some of the more radical, intricate designs on display at The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze just defy belief. Can an abstract “Celtic knot” actually be hand-carved? Or are these things stamped out at a factory?

Trying to get to the bottom of this, I challenged Michael Natiello, the creative designer behind Blaze and all-around pumpkin carving guru, to shed at least a little spidery candlelight on the process.

CelticPattern2.jpgTurns out it all starts with a hand-drawn pattern, like the example shown here. In order to get such a meticulous, eye-popping carved pumpkin, it pays to be patient and spend some time drawing the design, first on paper (as shown in the other image here), and then eventually transferring it or drawing it on the pumpkin.

Once that part’s complete, you bust out an array of tools that would make a medieval surgeon grin ear-to-ear to start the actual carving. More on that in future entries. Michael will hopefully chime in on what, besides a steady hand, the fledgling abstract carver needs to create pleasing pumpkinscapes.

For now, these two pictures perfectly demonstrate the argument for “drawing first, then carving,” and, I’m convinced, totally disprove the stamped-out-at-a-factory notion. Score one for Natiello…

Wow, I attended the Blaze in 2006 and it was superb! I missed last year and have thought about it all the time since! We have plans to attend this year for the fantastic 2008 celebration!! I hope the wonderful live band that was playing the eerie and supernatural music will be present! THIS IS NOT TO MISS!! The BLAZE is GREAT for ALL AGES! A BIG HOOORAY for Halloween! The carvings are ASTONISHING and CAPTIVATING! Who on earth has the talent to execute such a wonderful present to mankind?

Thanks for all the positive feedback! And thanks to all the visitors who truly help make it happen and inspire us to create more complex and intricate carvings and installations year after year. Blaze '07 promises to be bigger and better than last year! Right now I'm working on some designs and installations that wil knock your socks offl ! Keep your eyes open for a "how to carve" posting in the near future as well as some behind the scenes / "how do they do that" type postings!
Enjoy!

A friend and I visited The Blaze last year when we were in the NYC area visiting other friends. We are from Newark, Ohio and they are from Long Island and had never been there before. It was unbelievable!! The craftmanship was outstanding and the different themes were amazing. It was easy to get to and very well organized. We hope to get there again this year!

I wasn't going to write anything but hey it's Friday the 13th so I am inspired to think about halloween even though it's the summertime. I think this blog is a really good idea. It gives you an idea of how good the event is. Well, you should also consider adding the halloween event at Philipsburg Manor to this blog. They have the headless horseman there, which is TOTALLY cool. Cooler than the pumpkins? You have to see for yourself. Maybe not cooler but just as cool. Whatever. Nice blog, though.

My family visited the Blaze last year and was very excited to find the web site to share with my friends. They thought I was exaggerating about the AMAZING displays. This is a marvelous festival that has to be seen to believe. The artistic designs and creativity is fantastic! I share it with anyone that might be in the area. Kudo's to the whoever designs and creates such beautiful imagery!
