Where do flowers chuckle and birds play tricks? In The Magic Garden of course! For people of a certain generation, the Hello Song and Carole and Paula’s friendly voices provided the sound track for our afternoon post-school snack.
Those were largely pre-cable days and smart phones were the stuff of Jetson’s fantasy. The show was filmed in the WPIX – channel 11 studios and eventually broadcast nationwide. The Magic Garden bloomed for 12 years and the women behind the guitars ,Carole Demas and Paula Janis, pursued other creative interests, yet always had time for Magic Garden live shows.
But beautiful celluloid gardens do not die. In 1994, Nick Jr. began to broadcast reruns of The Magic Garden, fan sites sprung up on the Internet, and a whole new generation of children learned the beloved songs and stories that so enchanted their parents.
With the DVD release of their 10 favorite episodes in 2002, Carole and Paula’s ability to charm children and satisfy their parents’ nostalgia increased and sustained their popularity with new a whole new generation. This year, the women celebrate the 40th anniversary of their creative partnership on The Magic Garden as well as their lifelong friendship. They sound just as sweet and fresh as they did in 1972.
You can discover the special magic of The Magic Garden on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Washington Irving's Sunnyside, when the duo will perform as part of Historic Hudson Valley's Children’s Book Day event. You can get a flavor by watching the video on this page of their performance at last year's event.
After the concert, which begins at 4:30, Carole and Paula will happily pose for photos and reminisce with fans young and old. “We never imagined them grown up, coming with their own children now, to performances like those we do for you at Sunnyside!” said Carole.
