Diversifying non-profit seeks persuasive, versatile writer to help tell its story

Historic Hudson Valley (www.hudsonvalley.org) is the largest cultural institution in Westchester County, New York. A non-profit organization, it educates and entertains more than 300,000 visitors a year through school programs, tours of National Historic Landmarks, and large-scale ticketed public events like The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze and Horseman’s Hollow.

The organization seeks a seasoned writer to join a three-person fundraising team raising a broad base of support from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies. This is a full-time, office-based position in Westchester County, New York.

This position requires a creative and intelligent writer capable of communicating the organization's mission, programs, and character through well-crafted grant applications, solicitation letters, sponsorship proposals, progress reports, presentations, and digital content. The ideal candidate will have demonstrable fluency in and experience with the following categories of writing: scholarly educational content; sensitive letters to high worth individuals; courteous professional communications; and entertaining prose for public event audiences. This writing-intensive position involves working with inter-departmental teams developing grant applications for educational programs, digital projects, capital projects, and public events. Major programmatic themes include slavery in the colonial North, Washington Irving and the art of storytelling, and women’s history in the Hudson Valley. Other responsibilities include prospect research, grants management, sponsorship recognition, and donor relations. Historic Hudson Valley has a track record of securing grants from federal and state agencies including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, New York State Council on the Arts, NYS Department of Transportation, and Empire State Development Corporation.

The successful candidate will have a BA in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field and at least five years of professional writing experience. Strong computer, budgeting, proofreading, and organizational skills are necessary. Fund-raising background preferred, but not required.

The salary for this position will be $60K annually with a competitive benefits package. Some evening, weekend, and holiday hours are required at special events.
