Diversifying non-profit seeks persuasive, versatile writer to help tell its story

Historic Hudson Valley (www.hudsonvalley.org) seeks a seasoned writer to join a three-person development team raising a broad base of support from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies.   

The position requires an experienced writer capable of capturing and communicating the organization’s mission, programs, and character through well-crafted, persuasive grant applications, solicitation and acknowledgement letters, sponsorship proposals, progress reports, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, and digital content. Ability to draft prose for a variety of audiences, in a variety of voices and styles, on deadline, is essential.      

This writing-intensive position involves working with, and sometimes leading, inter-departmental teams developing grant applications for educational programs, digital projects, capital projects, and public events. Major programmatic themes include slavery in the colonial North, Washington Irving and the art of storytelling, and women’s history in the Hudson Valley.  Other responsibilities include prospect research, grants management, sponsorship recognition, and donor relations. Historic Hudson Valley has a track record of securing grants from federal and state agencies including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, New York State Council on the Arts, NYS Department of Transportation, and Empire State Development Corporation.     

The successful candidate will have a BA in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field and at least five years of professional writing experience. Computer, budgeting, proofreading, and organizational skills necessary. Fund-raising background preferred, but not required.

This is a full-time, office-based position in Westchester County, New York with a competitive benefits package. Some evening, weekend, and holiday hours are required at special events.
